Washington, DC - Congressman Dan Lungren (R-CA), made the following statement today after signing a discharge petition, introduced by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), Rep. John Culberson (R-TX) and Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA), that will require the Democrat Majority to allow Members of Congress, and the American public, 72 hours to review legislation before it is brought up for a vote in the House of Representatives: "Last year we heard multiple speeches from Presidential candidates and Speaker Pelosi promising increased transparency and accountability in Washington. We are nine months into the 111th Congress and those promises appear to be a mile wide and an inch deep. The news of this bipartisan effort to put teeth into legislative review is encouraging and one that I support 110 percent. Since returning to Congress, I have fought for reform to increase the transparency of government. We are asked to make important decisions on issues affecting the future of this country and making it mandatory that three days of review are necessary before a final vote is a step in the right direction. It is my hope that the Majority will allow us to have a straight up or down vote on this." H. Res. 554 would amend House rules to require that all legislation be readily accessible for public review on the Internet for at least 72 hours before a vote on the House floor. Exceptions would be made for classified material, which would continue to be handled under existing laws and rules. If the petition receives 218 signatures-a simple majority of the full House-the bill, H. Res. 554, could be voted on.
